Procrastination of a Higher Order or Helping Lach (Lock)

Creating a Supportive Learning Environment through appropriate behaviour management strategies. Ok so if you can give a brief outline about your background and what school you are teaching in currently and what grades you are involved in. Also your expertise and maybe a brief sentence about why you like teaching.

Xanthe (Grad Dip Ed BA Drama) has over ten years experience in Drama, Music Theatre and Theatre in Education, having completed her formal studies in the Performing Arts at Queensland University of Technology in 1996. She is currently teaching secondary Drama and is acting as a Performing Arts and Educational Consultant for the inaugural Solarcoaster Parents’ and Children’s Festival.

Xanthe is well known to Sunshine Coast audiences as an actor, singer, dancer and director. She has been involved in more than 30 local adult and youth productions and eisteddfods, and most recently in May 2007, she performed multiple roles in the musical revue I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. Xanthe is committed to teaching performance and personal skills that encourage, inspire and develop the abilities of students to think creatively and boldly, to read, write and perform with critical awareness and to be sensitive and self disciplined in their approach to their ambitions in the Performing Arts Industries.

- How would you describe your teaching style?

professional and relaxed, friendly. able to be negotiated with on some points, like due dates and extended study options and super-strict on others, like the way teachers and peers are treated/spoken to and performance standards for student actors.

- How important is behaviour management in the subject you teach?

central to drama, as everyone needs to feel that they are working in a safe environment, in which they can feel free to express themselves openly and to take risks without being bullied or distracted from their goals as a performer etc.

- Is there one special behaviour management technique you focus on because it suits the environment and context of the subject that you are teaching? Or do use a variety of behaviour management techniques?

a variety in drama but I focus on establishing good rapport with stronger individuals in the group first, then developing good relationships with all students as quickly as possible. I learn all the names in the first three days and I remember details like, “You like the arctic monkeys. Did you know, they’re on Triple J every night this week at 8pm?” (this is such a good trick with seniors!) and of course, open, clear communication, in terms of high expectations and precise directions. honest, feedback and constructive criticism. lots of praise and self-esteem building. games.

- As a teacher, what have your experiences taught you about behaviour management and through your teaching experiences, what part of behaviour management is most important.?
