okay, so there's a special occasion and you're still on the coast rather than jetting about, buying louboutin and jimmy choos in exotic cities? where do you go to celebrate? why, the french room, of course! despite its questionable location (ie woombye. where? I know, I hear you, sister), the french room is an intimate fine dining experience, second to none (on the coast that is). I'm sure there are venues to rival it in paris, milan, london, new york, brisvegas...but here we are. and we have a birthday. we both have a birthday. same day, date, year. soulsisters. from opposite ends of the world. now you don't get that every day, do you? so every year, Karen and her man Andrew and me and my man Sam, bling up (this year in the coveted pandora. thanks, boys) and go somewhere special for dinner. two years ago it was the golden arches at kuluin (and very lovely happy meals we had there too). Last year, earth in mooloolaba was graced by our party presence (and it has since closed, the space waiting, alluringly empty and full of promises. we can only hope that someone with similiar dreams and a helluva lot more money sees it and opens a cigar/cosmopolitan jazz lounge). but I digress...
the chef at the french room is, not surprisingly, known for his arrogance when it comes to the delicacies on offer. and not only that, we were fortunate to have a table due to some oversight during the booking process! anyway, apparently the baguette dough is sent from paris and then baked in his kitchen, due to the pitiful flour and water we have here in this backward country. and it is delicious. as are all the options. on a previous visit, we enjoyed duck confit and some dish (with some french name) of meltingly tender steak with truffles and french beans. dessert? take your pick from crepes suzette, (real as opposed to coffee club) creme brulee, apple and pear tarte tartin and my favourite- baked chocolate pudding and saffron pears. this time we had the wagyu steak, which exceeded expectations and was preceded by delicate tassy scallops and aniseed snails (I ate a snail!) The (french) champagne was excellent, we ought to know after the second bottle and the (french) wine was exceptional, though not to Karen's liking. again, no idea of the names. apologies go out to my wine connoiseur friends. we will simply have to go back for more!
and so my friend and I are thirty. again. and for as long as we can get away with it!
